Mayor's Message

One of the most touching experiences I have had as Mayor was to participate in a special ceremony designating 100 North with the honorary title of “LCPL Welch Blvd”. This ceremony commemorated the 50th anniversary of when LCPL Blaine Welch was killed in action during the Vietnam War. He was the only Heber resident who lost his life in that war. Many of his friends and family members were in attendance for the heartwarming ceremony. I couldn’t help but think of my own son who is about the same age and enrolled in Air Force ROTC in college.

The thought of losing a child is heartbreaking under any circumstances but the idea of a young man leaving home committed to serving his country and never returning again is a tragedy that is almost unbearable. Unfortunately, it is a painful reality that many families have had to face throughout our nation’s history.

I’m sure that pain never goes away. I’m sure the absence at birthdays, holidays and family gatherings stings. Although it may dull a bit over time I’m sure that those who have not experienced such a loss can comprehend what that must be like. There were several veterans there to honor LCPL Welch. I stood next to one and I will never forget his story. The treatment he received upon returning home is inexcusable and  stain on our nation’s history. Thankfully the gratitude and honor that these veterans deserve is being shown in some ways, better late than never.

We were honored to have Vietnam combat veteran Dennis Howland in attendance. He is the president of the Northern Utah chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He shared photos with me of a new  Vietnam memorial at the Layton Commons Park that is 80% the size of the one in Washington, DC. It was just dedicated in July and cost $500,000 to construct. I hope we can all pause regularly to remember the sacrifice made by so many to protect our country and the freedoms we enjoy.

School Zone Safety

With students heading back to school, those yellow flashing lights will once again be warning drivers to slow down. There are several crosswalks in the city, and our kids walk across them daily. Keeping our kids and crossing-guards’ safe is a big priority for the police department. Please use caution during school zone times, and use the following tips:

• _{Be on the lookout for school zone signals and ALWAYS obey the speed limit (Fines are doubled for speeding in school zones).}

• _{When entering a school zone, be sure to obey all traffic laws.}

• _{Watch out for school crossing guards and obey their signals.}

• _{Be aware of children near schools, bus stops, sidewalks, in the streets, in school parking lots, etc.}

• _{Never pass other vehicles while driving in a school zone.}

• _{Never make a U-Turn in a school zone.}

• _{Never text while driving in a school zone, and avoid using your cell phone.}

SPEED CONTROL

Do you have a problem with cars speeding in your neighborhood? You can request a Radar Trailer. A Radar Trailer is a great tool because officers aren’t able to be everywhere at once. 

The majority of time people don’t realize they are speeding and the Radar Trailer alerts them. If you would like to request a Radar Trailer in your neighborhood you can call the police department at 435-654-3040 and ask for Officer Stowe or Officer Thomas.

Another Successful Season for the Heber Valley Market

Thank you to everyone who helped with the 2018 Heber Valley Market and Concerts in the Park! There were 82 vendors that contributed to making this year full of a variety of food choices, crafts, jewelry, clothing, accessories and information about their businesses! 

Thank you to all of the sponsors whose contribution makes it possible to keep the Thursday night tradition going! With a different band playing different genres of music each week, it was great to see the park fill up with people of all ages enjoying the atmosphere! A special thank you to the Heber City Parks department and the many hours spent preparing the Park and cleaning up afterwards.
